November 12th/November 13th 2011: Just Dropped

Although Friday was the 11th, today, the nearest Sunday was official Remembrance Sunday. It’s strange to see men at memorials to the dead of the 1st and 2nd World Wars, of my age and younger, in military uniform, but missing limbs – so far 385 British soldiers have died in Afghanistan and it’s only because of body armour that the number of dead is so comparatively low, but the number of damaged limbs so high. There’s no real way to express gratitude to this group of soldiers, marines and airmen than those who have served and sacrificed in the past. Except that we will remember them…..

November 10th/November 11th 2011: Just Dropped

Remembrance Day (also known as Poppy Day, Armistice Day) is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth countries since the end of World War I to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. This day, or alternative dates, are also recognized as special days for war remembrances in many non-Commonwealth countries. Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November to recall the official end of World War I on that date in 1918; hostilities formally ended “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month” of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice (“at the 11th hour” refers to the passing of the 11th hour, or 11:00 a.m.)
